History

The Squadron Supreme is a team of Earth Mightiest heroes from Earth-712 or Earth-S. The founding members of the Squadron are Hyperion, Power Princess, Doctor Spectrum, Amphibian, Whizzer, Skrullian Skymaster and Nighthawk. The Squadron Supreme first caught the notice of our Earth’s heroes when four Avengers (Vision, Hawkeye (as Goliath), Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver) were inadvertently shunted to the Squadron’s dimension. This quartet of Avengers realized that the Squadron’s world was doomed to destruction by the machinations of the evil Brain-Child, and so the two super-teams joined forces to thwart his doomsday plot.

Marvel Super-Heroes

Some years later, the Avengers came into conflict with the Squadron Supreme after leaders of the Squadron’s world fell under the influence of the malevolent Serpent Crown. While investigating the Roxxon Corporation on their world, the Avengers were defeated by the Squadron who had been summoned by Roxxon’s Hugh Jones -- also under the spell of the Serpent Crown. When the Avengers eventually escaped imprisonment, Jones shunted them and the Squadron back to Earth-712, the Squadron Supreme’s homeworld. It was here the Avengers realized the extent of the Serpent Crown’s influence, and they eventually hatched a plan to convince the Squadron that they were being manipulated by its (and thus, their leaders’) influence.

The Squadron became victims of mental manipulation again when the Overmind (himself manipulated by Null the Living Darkness) arrived on their Earth and quickly made the Squadron pawns in his mad quest for galactic power. Kyle Richmond, formerly the Squadron’s Nighthawk, was President of the United States at this time, and the Overmind used this to his advantage in controlling the Squadron Supreme. Eventually, the Defenders of Earth-616 were able to assist in preventing the Overmind’s plans.
Despite the victory over the Overmind, Earth-712 remained in a shambles due mainly as a result of the formerly-possessed Squadron’s actions. The Squadron, pondering how to literally save the planet, decided to implement a Utopia Program whereby they would become active participants in solving the world’s problems instead of merely reacting to them. This meant, however, that the Squadron would have to usurp virtually all control from elected governments. Nighthawk vehemently disagreed with the team’s decision, and opted to resign his membership rather than assist the Utopia Program. Nighthawk shortly thereafter recruited a band of rebels to fight the Squadron after he believed the team had gone too far in violating the rights of citizens. A big factor in his decision was the Squadron’s use of a behavior modification device on criminals to make them no longer prone to criminal behavior.

Originally the Institute was an alliance of some of the greatest foes of the Squadron Supreme joined together by the Scarlet Centurion to combat the Squadron in a battle arranged as a contest between the Centurion and the Grandmaster. Losing the battle the Institute were incarcerated but eventually escaped. After the Squadron began their Utopia Program the Institute went into hiding. The Golden Archer was expelled from the Squadron and was captured shortly thereafter by the Institute. He was tortured and interrogated by the Institute who gained information about Tom Thumb's behavior modification machines as well as the locations of the Squadron members families. Ape-X (leader of the Institute) sent Lamprey after Arcanna Jones's husband and children, Foxfire was sent after Power Princess's husband, Quagmire went to retrieve the wife and children of the Whizzer, and Doctor Decibel and Shape were sent after the mother of the Blue Eagle.

After the kidnappings, the Institute (except Ape-X) attacked Tom Thumb at Squadron headquarters, behavior modifying Tom to obey their commands and setting up an ambush for the rest of the Squadron. The Squadron surrendered once the Institute revealed they held the Golden Archer and their family members captive. The Whizzer, who was the last to arrive, escaped while the other members were behavior modified similar to Tom Thumb. Eventually Whizzer was captured as well and all of the Squadron members were brought to the Institute’s base where the hostages were being held. Upon arrival at the Institute’s headquarters the Squadron attacked the Institute’s members and rescued the hostages, revealing that Tom Thumb had adjusted the behavior modification machines so that they wouldn’t work on Squadron members.

Once the Institute of Evil members were defeated they were behavior modified to be contributing members of society and later were voted into the Squadron completely disbanding the Institute.

The Redeemers

Eventually, Nighthawk and his band of rebels, called the Redeemers, fought the Squadron and both sides suffered heavy casualties, including Nighthawk himself. The Squadron came to realize that Nighthawk was right, and they began to dismantle their Utopia Program. Unfortunately, in the process of this, a being of virtually omnipotent power called the Nth Man threatened to consume the Squadron’s entire universe. Even the Squadron’s arch-enemy, Master Menace, was unable to thwart the Nth Man after spending over a decade in the future using high technology to perfect a weapon against him. The Nth Man’s threat was stopped only by Moonglow agreeing to allow the Nth Man to switch entities with her infant son.

Marvel Super-Heroes

The Golden Archer abuses the behavior modification technology by forcing a fellow member to love him, resulting in his removal from the team. Fellow member Amphibian resigns in protest over the misuse of the behavior modification technology while Nuke inadvertently kills his own parents (via radiation) and after a rampage dies battling Doctor Spectrum. Nighthawk attempts in vain to solicit the aid of the Avengers, and is eventually forced to confront his old teammates with a new team. A brutal battle ensues in which several members of both teams are killed, including Nighthawk. A horrified Hyperion ends the battle when he realizes that Nighthawk was in fact right.

Soon after these events, the remnants of the Squadron Supreme reunite to battle the supervillain the Nth Man, a living space-warp who was banished from the Earth-616 universe. Although the Nth Man is eventually stopped, several members of the team are killed in the battle, with the remainder banished to the Earth-616 universe.

Marvel Super-Heroes

After the Nth Man’s threat was extinguished, Master Menace conspired to shunt the Squadron Supreme out of their universe. They ended up in our own, that of Earth-616. The team found temporary sanctuary at Project: PEGASUS with the assistance of Quasar. Once again coming under mental domination, the team entered into conflict with the Avengers. The Squadron was brainwashed to believe that the Avengers were still dead due to the Onslaught incident, thanks to the machinations of Imus Champion and the chemical influence of the Corruptor. Even though the latter’s influence was discovered, Champion still managed to get the two super-teams together for him to defeat. Only the timely intervention of Giant Man saved the day.
Thanks to Imus Champion’s vast collection of weapons and paraphernalia, Iron Man discovered a dimensional transport device that would send the Squadron Supreme home. After several missteps, the team found themselves back in the universe of Earth-712; however, they soon discovered that their Earth had been taken over by a corporate dictatorship, called the Global Directorate, during their long absence. The Squadron was now considered an enemy of the people. Uncertain as to what to do, an entity called Mysterium then appeared and directed the team to find its original members to fight the dictatorship. It was soon revealed that Mysterium was once the Nth Man, the entity that had threatened the Squadron’s universe. After the existing Squadron members recruit the founding members of the team – including Kyle Richmond’s son Neal, the new Nighthawk – the team sets off to battle the dictatorship. The dictatorship’s weapons are extremely powerful, and soon it’s revealed that Master Menace had been captured and behavior-modified to serve the new leadership. It is his genius that is behind the leadership’s high technology. The Squadron eventually succeeded in their rebellion over the Global Directorate.

The remnants of the Squadron, (Hyperion; Doctor Spectrum; Whizzer; Power Princess; Lady Lark (now known as Skylark); Moonglow; Haywire and Shape), have several encounters with the cosmic hero Quasar and eventually come to reside at the Project Pegasus base under the supervision of Dr. Andrew Kappelhoff. Kappelhoff is later revealed to be the supervillain the Corruptor, who at the request of his own employer, mastermind Imus Champion, manipulates the Squadron into battling the Avengers once more. The two super teams, however, manage to unite and defeat both the Corruptor and Imus Champion. A device found in Champion's collection of technology is also able to return the Squadron to its own universe.

Marvel Super-Heroes

The Squadron returns to the Earth-712 universe to discover that their world is now dominated by corporations that are using the Squadron's own Utopia technologies. The Squadron manages to reinstate democracy, but later come into conflict with a new government when the superhero team the Exiles, traveling from the Earth-616 universe, reveal that the government had rigged the election with a worldwide vote fraud. The Squadron Supreme and the Exiles depose the new government, and again attempt to allow society to progress without superhuman involvement.

The Squadron Supreme (Earth 712) is a team of super-heroes that originated on Earth 712 The Main Marvel Universe is Earth 616) The Squadron team first appeared in Avengers vol. 1, #85-86. Several of the characters were heroic versions of a super-villain team called The Squadron Sinister.

Both sets of characters were created by Roy Thomas (writer) and John Buscema (artist), and were based on the Super-Hero team Justice League, owned by Marvel Comics' rival, DC Comics.
Within the Marvel Universe, the Squadron Supreme came from a parallel Earth (designated Earth-712) to that of mainstream Marvel Comics continuity. These characters were later revised in the comic title Supreme Power, set on yet another parallel Earth (designated Earth-31916).

The cosmic entity, The Grandmaster created the Squadron Sinister based on the "already existing Squadron Supreme. The Avengers simply met the "copies" first.

Earth-31916 Hyperion (Supreme Power)
Marvel Super Heroes Marvel Super Heroes Marvel Super Heroes
Somewhere in Middle America of Earth-31816, an elderly couple found a ship with an infant child inside. They decided to take it home with them, and look after it. Soon after, their farm house was surrounded by US government agents and helicopters. The infant and ship were taken into US custody.        After extensive tests it appeared that the baby was developing different abilities, such has impenetrable skin and strength, that only seemed to be getting stronger as the days went by. The government decided to raise the child on their own, making him the "ultimate American," with hopes of turning him into a weapon. The government assigned two agents to the child to be his parents. They would be in charge or raising and educating the boy. The undertaking was called Project: Hyperion.
After testing the space ship, it was found to be releasing small amounts of an unknown retrovirus. It would later be linked to others developing special abilities.
As time went on, Mark Milton's powers developed at an alarming rate. He accidentally used his "flash vision" to reduce a small puppy to ashes in front of his "parents'" eyes. He could see into houses miles away. He knew he was different; and he slowly figured out he was being used by the US government. He broke ties with the government and asked to be left alone. The government panicked, and recruited a team to take down Hyperion. After a brief battle, the group "time-jumps" and Hyperion sees the results of his actions: a world were he is the ruler. They then jump back to the present and Hyperion agrees to join the governments super army.

Powers Hyperion possesses superhuman strength, stamina, speed and durability. His senses are also greatly enhanced, including allowing him to perceive the entire electro- magnetic spectrum. He also has atomic vision which is quite similar to heat vision.

Earth-4023 King Hyperion (Exiles)

Marvel Super Heroes
In this reality Hyperion (Zhib Rahn) is a villainous maniac who is the ruler of his original reality. King Hyperion hails from a world that he became the ruler of. The countries of his world were not willing to let Hyperion take over without a fight so they began a nuclear war in an attempt to kill Hyperion. Ironically, the nuclear attack killed every living being on Earth except for Hyperion. As the sole survivor of his planet, Hyperion was conscripted into Weapon X, taking the took the place of a deceased Storm. Right away Hyperion came into conflict with Weapon X's leader Gambit and became involved with Ms. Marvel. They were placed on an Earth where there were only ten mutants remained, and their assignment was to annihilate these remaining mutants. Hyperion originally intended to stay on the planet and become its new ruler, but he made the decision that the world was not going to survive and he completed the mission, murdering Colossus and Vision in the process.
Eventually Hyperion came upon a world where he wished to remain and slaughtered all of the American heroes in New York City on that Earth. The Exiles teamed up with Weapon X's leader Gambit and took their fight to Hyperion. In the ensuing battle Morph kills Ms. Marvel, Firestar kills Spider while Hyperion killed Hulk, Firestar, and Illyana Rasputin. After decimating the Exiles team in combat, Hyperion is finally injured by Blink, using her powers to cause Hyperion to injure himself with his heat vision. This crippled Hyperion, allowing Gambit the opportunity to use Magik's sword to destroy him. The ensuing explosion killed both Gambit and Hyperion and the Exiles made their way to another reality. However the bodies of the deceased members (including Hyperion) were teleported to the Crystal Palace where the Timebreakers had been placing the bodies of dead members of both Weapon X and the Exiles on display. Hyperion's body was also put on display and his cells began storing solar energy allowing him to recover from his wounds. Eventually recovered of his injuries, Hyperion broke out of the crystal stasis he was being held in and took hold of the Timebreakers' operations.
Taking over the Timebroker interface Hyperion had the Exiles travel to a world ruled by Zarathos. Then he sent them to Earth-2600 where Hyperion had Sabretooth join the team (replacing Heather Hudson) in an effort to make Blink second-guess herself. He then had the team go to the Age of Apocalypse where he had Holocaust join the team (replacing Beak) in an attempt to have them killed. Instead Holocaust worked with the Exiles to teleport directly to the Panoptichron where Hyperion immediately killed Holocaust by absorbing all of his essence. Hyperion managed to seriously injure Morph and Mimic and kill Namora. The Timebreakers release Blackwing from stasis concluding that he was the most likely to resolve the situation. Finding no alternative, Beak recruited two other-dimensional Hyperions from Earth-712 and Earth-5764. These two Hyperions managed to take King Hyperion down with a final moment assist by Mimic. The Exiles, the Hyperions, and the Timebreakers made the decision, since they could not kill King Hyperion, to imprison him back on his original reality where he could do no further damage.
