In the early days of the Legion (circa 2974), the Legion of Super-Heroes were
rendered powerless against the Brain-Globes of Rambat, whose telepathic communicators
were able to force the Super-Heroes' minds to obey their instructions not to spoil
their plan of moving Earth to a more hospitable (for them) purple-sun system. The
Legionnaires, in analyzing the Globes, realized that they were only capable of
telepathically communicating with life-forms that had higher-order brains, such as
human beings, but would be powerless against animals. To defeat the Brain-Globes,
the Legionnaires combed the galaxy for super-powered animals, and came up with
Comet, a Super-Horse, once a centaur who was turned into a horse by the Hag, but
could turn into a human being in the presence of a comet, a Super-Monkey and
Super-Dog, both of whom had been experimented on by some scientists curious about
Daxamite powers, and each of whom had super-strength, speed and flying abilities
(though none of the other Daxamite powers, such as their vision abilities, and
they had no weakness toward lead), and Streaky, a Super-Cat that received super-speed
when it was used in a botched time-travel experiment. The four animals were given a
portion of Saturn Girl's telepathic power to enable them to communicate with one
another, and under the Legion of Super-Heroes' direction, drove the Brain-Globes
off of Earth. The Legionnaires dubbed the four animals the Legion of Super-Pets,
and they were informally "adopted" by the Legion (Adventure Comics # 293).
The Super-Pets were occasionally called on by the Legion to guard the Legion's
headquarters, and on one occasion in late 2975, Chameleon Boy's pet Proty II,
petitioned to join their ranks, as it felt that it would provide a good disguise
for its sentience. Proty II joined in
Adventure Comics # 322. The Pets proved useful on other occasions as well, for
instance, when the Legion fought the fake Luck Lords, whose psychoactive rays were
useful only on higher-order creatures' minds (Adventure Comics # 343), or when
they needed the print of an enchanted horse's shoe to counteract the spell that
made the White Witch into the Hag in the first place, Comet provided it (Adventure
Comics # 351), and when the Legion needed to stop some pirates who were operating
as the "Ghost Ship of Space" (Adventure Comics # 364) and when Valor needed
distractions to keep the Legionnaires out of their headquarters for several days
during the Dream Girl-predicted attack of Skyzznx and Alrrk, they provided it
(Adventure Comics # 380). On the other hand, they were occasionally insulted by
the Legion's condescending attitude toward them (because, although they were, with
the exception of Comet and Proty, indeed less intelligent than humans, they were
considerably more intelligent than normal Earth animals), and were easy prey for
the flattery of such villains as the inhabitants of the planet Thanl. To their
credit, the Pets exposed the Thanlians too, after Saturn Girl, who detected the
telepathy-energy she gave the Pets in two "new applicants," who were actually
Comet and Proty in disguise, letting them "join" the Legion and figure out the
Thanlians' scheme themselves (Adventure Comics # 364).
After 2980, the Pets were seldom contacted by the Legion, and they went their own
seperate ways, a great relief to Proty II, who, though it understood the importance
of hiding its sentience, felt that the "pet" treatment was extremely demeaning.
