Bizzaro Legionnaires : The name Bizarro was the name given to an imperfect
duplicate of Superman that had been created by his enemy, Lex Luthor in the late
20th century (Superman: The Man of Steel (1st series) # 5). While the original
Bizarro was destroyed by Superman shortly after its creation, there have been
repetitions of the Bizarro experiment, all of which invariably yield the same
result: an imperfect duplicate of the original, with white crystalline skin
(no matter what the skin color of the original sample was), complete lack of
normal physical needs such as oxygen, and intelligence below normal human level.
Bizarros also often have a tendency to emphasize attributes that are opposite
that of ordinary beings; for example, what most beings would consider unpleasant,
Bizarros enjoy. Despite these deficiencies, Bizarro is, in the thirtieth century,
still considered the foremost example of the creation of artificial life.
When a group of Legionnaires was stuck in the twentieth century, Brainiac 5 took advantage of the situation to copy documents by Luthor relating to the Bizarro process. After those Legionnaires returned to the thirtieth century, Brainiac 5 secretly began to experiment with the creation of Bizarro material. At one point during these experiments, shortly after the creation of the Anywhere Machine, he managed to discover a way to trigger the Bizarro process through application of specific light frequencies. A sudden surge of power caused his Bizarro light-ray to trigger too strongly, resulting in the transformation of every being and object within the Legion Outpost, as well as the Outpost itself into a twisted Bizarro form (how Brainiac 5 got this process to apply to inanimate objects is uncertain) (Legion of Super-Heroes (3rd series) # 113). When Live Wire, Invisible Kid, Ferro and Karate Kid returned, they found their headquarters and their friends in this odd state and had to put up with such bizarre oddities as a party with inedible "delicacies", a security system that had to be licked, and Bizarro-Violet's happily making a hole in the "Legion Inpost" with excessive growth and then plugging it with her face. Ferro, having heard of the original Bizarro in the twentieth century, recognized the Bizarro Legionnaires for what they were and soon, with the help of the Bizarro-Koko, Invisible Kid understood exactly what had happened. While he attempted to cure their conditions, most of the Bizarros fled the "Inpost." However, the one that remained was Bizarro-Dyrk Magz, who was as powerful as his normal self was powerless. He captured Live Wire, Ferro and Karate Kid and turned them into Bizarros while Invisible Kid watched invisibly. From the fact that the ray didn't affect him while he was invisible, Invisible Kid concluded that the Bizarro ray was an odd form of light, and tried to find the right light frequency for reversing the change. When he thought he had found it, he broadcast his image to the cruiser containing most of the Bizarro Legionnaires, and exposed them to it while telling them of how the Legion began by saving the life of R. J. Brande. Invisible Kid then discovered that he used the wrong light frequency, and that his attempt was eroding the normal DNA in them, not the Bizarro DNA. And on top of that, the Bizarros decided they had to perform a Bizarro Legion "origin"...by murdering R. J. Brande (Legion of Super-Heroes (3rd series) # 114).
Fortunately, the attempt on Brande's life failed when the Bizarro M'Onel succumbed
to his weakness...glass, which has properties that are in some ways opposite those
of the true M'Onel's weakness, lead. While Brande escaped the Bizarro Legion,
Invisible Kid outsmarted the Bizarro Legionnaires on the "Legion Inpost" long
enough for himself and the Bizarro Koko to build a ray that would separate the
Bizarro DNA in the Legionnaires from their normal DNA, splitting each of them
into two separate beings. Invisible Kid sent this light beam through the
communications device carried by every Bizarro Legionnaire, causing the real
Legionnaires to suddenly appear opposite their Bizarro counterparts. The real
Legionnaires then saved R. J. from the Bizarros, who then escaped back to the
"Inpost." With Brainiac 5 back to normal, the Legionnaires returned to the
"Inpost," where they shrank down the Bizarro Violet, repaired their headquarters,
and then shrank down all the Bizarro Legionnaires and trapped them in a cubic
force-field. The Legion then managed to restore their Outpost to normal as well
(Legion of Super-Heroes (3rd series) # 115).
The Bizarro Legion remains in that force field. The individual members are:
Bizarro M'Onel, who has all M'Onel's powers, but is vulnerable to glass, which lets everything pass through it, rather than to lead, which serves as a shield against radiation,
Bizarro Triad, who splits into three parts of a girl rather than into three whole girls like Tirad,
Bizarro Dyrk Magz, who has his full magnetic powers, unlike the real Dyrk Magz
Bizarro Karate Kid, who is fat, has a glass jaw, and doesn't know how to fight, the opposite of the real Karate Kid.
Bizarro Brainiac 5, who is stupid and has very bad memory as well, the opposite of the real Brainiac 5,
Bizarro Live Wire, Bizarro Spark, Bizarro Violet, Bizarro Kinetix and Bizarro Ferro, stupider and strange-looking versions of the normal Live Wire, Spark, Violet, Kinetix and Ferro,
Bizarro Koko, a brilliant scientist whose only verbalizations are the sound "Okok", the reverse of the real Koko, who has the intelligence of a monkey.
