Legion Academy : The Legion Academy was the outgrowth of several badly- organized and disastrous recruiting try-outs. With the funding the Legion received from the United Planets in 2978 after saving it from the Fatal Five, they started it up in part of the Legion's new headquarters complex. It was used not only to train potential new recruits, but also to provide re-training for Legionnaires who have felt that their skills were getting rusty, a fact that Colossal Boy took advantage of when his parents were held hostage for a copy of the Academy Training Manual (Adventure Comics # 371).
The Academy began with a large enrollment, but this had to be scaled back due to the difficulty of providing adequate training for a wide range of superhuman powers. By 2981, Academy membership had become a rather exclusive club, and the Academy building was sold to a health club, with the school moved out to Montauk Point, some seventy miles east of Legion headquarters. The teachers were outside experts until a funding crisis following the Earthwar and Omega attack led the Legion to fire most of them. When the Legion was flush again, they hired former Legionnaires Bouncing Boy and Duo Damsel as instructors, and they were the primary faculty members until the economic collapse of 2989 forced the Academy to close in 2990. Most of the students and staff went to work at the United Planets Militia Academy.
Courses at the Academy were varied, from generalized flight-ring training courses and armed and unarmed combat training (Adventure Comics # 371) to exercises in helping out the Science Police (Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes # 240, Legion of Super-Heroes (1st series) # 304). One training mission even resulted in the prevention of a Dominion attack on Weber's World and the formation of the second Legion of Substitute Heroes (Legion of Super-Heroes (2nd series) Annual # 3).
Among the more notable students that have been a part of the Legion Academy are Chemical King, Timber Wolf, Dawnstar, Tellus, Shadow Kid, Magnetic Kid, Power Boy, Laurel Kent, Mentalla, Nightwind, Lamprey, Crystal Kid, the second Karate Kid, Comet Queen, Mandalla, the Westerner and Visi-Lad.
