It is noon and there are clear skies in a beautiful day over Arizona. The quiet routine of several patrolling super-heroes is broken as a faint distress call comes over the high frequency band reserved for EBTN (Enhanced Being Threat Network) traffic.
"Help! Help!", comes the static-filled plea. "They're taking over!" A sound which could be a scream is heard and the voice shouts, "I'm in Ocotillo!" There is a burst of static and the message ends.
Among the heroes who receive the distress call is Adept, an Eternal who is restarting his costumed career after a 20 year hiatus. Adept immediately responds on the same frequency, "This is Adept! Please give coordinates!"
Falcon, a winged alien from a distant star system, who crash landed on earth several years ago hears the plea and soars into the Arizona sky.
Golem, the soul of a man encased in a body of living metal, who wishes to pay for his past misdeeds, hears the cry for help. "This is Golem!", he announces over his comm-unit in his hollow voice. "The town's location is about 20 miles northwest of downtown Phoenix. "
Starshine, female member of the famous Defense League is patrolling over central Phoenix and hears the distress call and Golem's response.
The hero called Touchstone, a mutant martial artist with mental powers, decides to assist and radios to announce his intentions.
Windrider, a beautiful flame haired woman endowed with mystical weather powers and possessing a magic sword, hears the messages and flies to the closest 7-11 to grab a map of the state. As she does so, her companion; an other-worldly Unicorn possessing great intelligence and wisdom appears and joins her. Windrider radios that it will take them approximately 4 minutes to reach the town of Ocotillo.

Golem and Starshine, being more experienced in working with groups, quickly coordinate with the other heroes and conclude that several of the heroes need assistance if they are to arrive at the town quickly. Fortunately, Falcon is nearby Golem's location and the Master of Metal Mimicry assumes the form of a shiny silver hovercraft and rendezvous with the winged hero. Golem, carrying Falcon, is soon joined by Starshine. They quickly accelerate to almost super-sonic speeds as introductions are made.

Starshine easily sights the flying Unicorn carrying Windrider but is startled when the Unicorn changes into a man and drops lightly into the open hovercraft. Windrider joins her mystic protector and introduces herself. The now changed Unicorn, is now a tall man with pale skin and long, white hair. He speaks little but seems fascinated by Golem. He introduces himself as "Keokeshala."
Last to be picked up is Touchstone. He is a lithe man who moves with fluid grace and is dressed in a tight black outfit with a high tech looking belt that seems to hum with power.

Adept, starting from outside Phoenix, heads directly toward the coordinates given and soon spots a strange phenomenon; a bluish-green field of force completely surrounds the town!! He radios this information to the group. The Eternal lands near the force field and peers into the small town's interior. He sees what seems to be a normal, small, Arizona town but there is evidence of violence within. A wrecked car burns near the center of the town and several small blast craters can been seen in the streets. Summoning his powers, Adept attempts to teleport past the force field but fails.
Increasing his efforts, he teleports and instantly appears inside the force field, on top of a building. Looking around, he spots an old man dressed in a butcher's apron. The apron is bloody and the man spots Adept and stares at him, hands on his hips.
Adept flies to where the man is and learns his name is 'Dick the Butcher'. The old man seems a bit 'off' and seems annoyed at Adept. He says that everyone in town is at the Jackrabbit Festival in a nearby town. When questioned about the force field, Dick scratches his head and says that it just appeared there this morning but doesn't seem too concerned about it. The man seems to consider Adept an outsider and troublemaker.
Frustrated, Adept turns to fly away to investigate the town when he is hit from behind by at least three powerful blasts of energy!!

Golem, carrying Keokeshala, Falcon, Windrider and Touchstone and accompanied by Starshine, reaches the outskirts of the town. They see the field of force surrounding the town and cautiously investigate. Starshine spots a crumpled figure in a colorful costume near the outside of the force field and the group lands to investigate. Falcon tries to rouse the stunned Eternal as Starshine and Golem investigate the shimmering force field.
As he regains his senses, Adept lashes out, thinking that Falcon and Keokeshala are who struck him down. He hits Falcon and amazingly, the winged man is teleported almost 65 feet away! Keokeshala holds back on attacking the dazed Eternal, realizing his error. Golem's hollow voice booms, "Stand Down NOW!!" He and Starshine quickly explain that they have come to assist in the investigation.
As the group gazes through the force field, they sight a group of kids playing. The kids spot the group of costumed heroes and run away screaming! Oddly, the children remind several of the group of the cast of "Spanky and Our Gang", an early B&W TV show.
Touchstone uses her mental powers & gets the impression of fright mixed with cunning.
Falcon, who has been studying the force field confides, "I'm not sure but this could be Skrull technology."

Golem uses his amazing powers to change shape into a massive crane with a wrecking ball! He tries to breach the force field but it barely wavers. The feedback inside the town is terrible, however, and several buildings are damaged and at least one fire is started.
Adept finally teleports half the group at a time into the town. The kids shape change into five Skrulls, one more imposing looking than the others.
The Skrulls seem to recognize Falcon and their lips curl with contempt and anger. They pull laser blasters and blaze away at the alien! Hit several times, Falcon is staggered.
Responding with little cohesion or coordination, the group respond to the Skrull's attack. Golem again startles the group by changing into a massive tank and smashing into several of the Skrulls. His armored form smashes three of the skrulls, breaking bones and nearly killing them. The remaining Skrulls are quickly overwhelmed.

After the Skrulls are healed and subdued, the group moves further into the town and spot a wrecked transmission tower. Touchstone again uses her mental empathy power and gets the impression of hatred and contempt!
Three powerful and deadly looking Skrulls stalk forth from the south and gaze balefully at the disorganized group. "Grovel, Dogs, and you may be allowed to live", growls one.
"This is the property of the Skrull Empire. You are Invaders.", states the Leader. A shadow of gloom seems to fall over the area.
