PRELUDE : Singularity is spending his time between studying the Enhanced Being Strategic Operations and Codes of Conduct Manual given to him by the Commission for Superhuman Activities and Samantha Moore. Of the two, he seems to be studying Samantha much more. Dr. Moore is attempting to understand his powers so she can help him develop them to their utmost.
Golem has also been trying to make the base's computer read his manual to him since he can not see the printed word. His efforts are largely unsuccessful since many of the controls have no markings he can read. Golem contacts Singularity and asks him to come to the base. When Singularity arrives, Golem gives Singularity a Star-Comm unit and explains its functions. While studying the base, Golem found 4 of the units.
After returning from a lengthy stay in England, Starshine has been trying to contact the Star Guard but keeps getting some type of garbled response in what she thinks is Kree. Finally, giving up on contacting the Star Guard base, she flies to the asteroid base and gains admitance. She immediately notices a series of amber and red lights flashing, signaling systems that are malfunctioning. Looking at the logs, she sees that there have been malfunctions for the last One and One-Half weeks and that no maintenance has been performed in over 6 months.

Golem and Singularity are embarrassed but can't read Kree and that is what many of the graphs, dials and manuals are written in. Starshine attempts some minor repairs but soon realizes that this is a long term job. She can not afford to be away from her job and her duties at the Defense League for that length of time.
Singularity examines the Star Gem and discovers a crack in its exterior that seems to run deep into the crystal! Golem watches Starshine making repairs but his super-natural senses can not see color or images on a monitor or printing on a page and so he is quickly left behind. As Starshine and Singularity attempt to get a system update, they notice several EBTNs requiring their attention. The EBTNs mostly deal with battle-suits that have been stolen from various installations around Washington DC.
Investigation reveals that the suits were all being experimented upon or being studied. In all cases, the thief came through the ventilation system and must have been the size of a softball. The Vault and Project Pegasus report that their facilities are secure. They also discover several messages that hint at trouble in Washington DC. All are signed as "A Friend" and all originate from highly improbable locations on Earth.
Three of the items stolen are Beetle, Crimson Dynamo and Mauler battle-suits. One bit of information that they do not connect is that all the suits stolen were cybernetically controlled.

As they try to sort through the clues, they receive an alert from Earth that an attack is taking place in Washington DC!!

THE ADVENTURE : The three heroes quickly fly at FTL speeds to Earth and move to geo-synchronous orbit over Washington. Golem selects his target as the Pentagon, knowing it is an object he can see from orbit.
As they near Washington, Singularity radios ahead and advises the police and government that the Star Guard is arriving to assist. They also contact The Vault and discover that Abner Jenkins, AKA The Beetle is supposedly still in custody.

As they come in closer, they can see wreckage and plumes of smoke rising from a block wide swathe of destruction. Four armored figures stride through the area, intent upon nothing more than casual destruction, it seems. Several police cars are burning wrecks and there are half a dozen damaged civilian vehicles. Wounded and trapped people cry out for help.
Singularity and Starshine immediately recognize three of the villains; Beetle, Crimson Dynamo and Mauler. (The super-villain, not the hero.) The third armored foe is a woman and is an unknown.
The situation is critical. The villains have plowed a 3 block long swathe of destruction and are headed toward several important landmarks, including the main FBI Building and Walter Reed Hospital.

Singularity moves into the area and announces, "This is Singularity of the Star Guard! You are ordered to cease all criminal activity." Mauler responds with a deadly laser attack that strikes Singularity a glancing blow.
"You had your chance, Buddy!", shouts Singularity. He creates a field of intense gravity around Mauler.
As the Star Guard enter the area, the villains identify themselves and turn their attention on them. The unknown woman calls herself "Hardshell". She seems to have high defenses and a very deadly hand to hand attack as well as a powerful ranged magnetic attack.
Their comm-unit suddenly crackle, "Be Aware! Be Aware! Two f-18's have been dispatched from Langley! ETA: 4 minutes!"
Starshine cries, "Halt Villains! This is Starshine of the Defense League!"

Golem considers announcing that he is Golem of Dr. Doom's Enforcer Squad but realizes that it might not go over well.
When the villains do not respond, Starshine unleashes her Radiation Stun attack on Beetle. The armored villain easily shrugs off the attack.
The villain whirls and strikes Starshine in the side with an Electro-Sting! Starshine is knocked off balance.
Golem moves into the area, dodging. Crimson Dynamo turns to face the metallic hero and hits him with a glancing blow from his Electro-Blasters.

Mauler cuts his way out of the gravity entangle and takes on a defensive stance. Singularity creates a wide field of gravity around Mauler, trapping him. Held tightly, Mauler yells, "Hey Lad!! Why you doing this?!"
"Because you're doing illegal activities!", responds Singularity.
Starshine sends a series of plasma rings around Beetle that wrap him up tight and solidify into steel hard bands. Beetle struggles vainly.
Golem lands near Crimson Dynamo and some instinct makes him pull his punch at the last minute. He strikes the crimson armored villain but has little effect.
Crimson Dynamo replies with a intense beam of energy that misses Golem but cuts a nearby car in two.
The costumed woman known as Hardshell seems more intent on destruction than on fighting the heroes but suddenly turns and sends a blast of magnetic energy into the frey.

Mauler cuts through the entangle and dodges behind a mailbox. Singularity turns his attention on Hardshell and attempts a new power; a gavitic energy blast tied to an intense gravity field. Hardshell cuts through the gravity field with contemptuous ease.
Beetle breaks free from the entangle and seems to be studying Starshine intently. "You face The Beetle!", cries the Villain.

"Take That!", cries Starshine. She star blasts the villain but misses.
Crimson Dynamo lashes out and Golem tries to block the blow but fails. The blow is much less than Golem expected. The crimson armored villain strikes and again succeeds in hitting Golem but the blow seems weak and ineffective.

Even outnumbered, the three heroes quickly take down the villains.

The heroes quickly incapacitate the villain's battle-suits but are shocked to see the unkempt condition of the villains. They appear to be thin and wasted and have obviously not bathed in days. Several are in need of hospital condition but the park police who arrive on the scene and then the FBI will not allow them to be taken to the Walter Reed Hospital which is right across the street.
The heroes move about the area, trying to help the injured and assist in any way that they can.
It is finally decided to move the criminals to a facility in Langley, Virginia. The heroes request to go along to escort the villains and make sure they arrive. They also get the uneasy feeling that these criminals are in for some pretty rough questioning and treatment.

The ground transport finally arrives and the villains are carted off to Virginia with the heroes carefully providing protection. At the facility, the remaining pieces of battle-suit are removed and stored away. The wearers of the suits recover consciousness and seem dazed and bewildered. The three men are quickly identified as personnel from the facilities from which the suits were stolen from. The woman appears to have suffered a memory loss.
Interrogation and examination of the suspects lead to the conclusion that they have been mind controlled.

The next day brings news that sheds light on the senseless attack. Right across the street from the melee, at the Walter Reed Hospital, The Wizard was undergoing treatments for exposure to Radiation at the Palo Verde Nuclear Facility. Using the chaos and confusion, he made good his escape with the aid of a small, soft- ball sized robot.
That night, the woman known as Hardshell displayed phenomenal strength and resistance to damage and broke free from her cell. She quickly incapacitated several guards and regained her battle-suit, using it to make her escape. She, it seems, was the real McCoy.
At Midnight, another message is received at the Star guard base. It says, "Thanks for the help in regaining my freedom." It is signed, "A Friend."
