PRELUDE : Adept, in his Secret Identity as Dr. Maxwell Mercury is on the short list of scientists who are considered to examine the mutagenic subjects of Dr. Flagg's experiments. Unfortunately, Dr. Mercury lacks the security clearance to visit The Vault. He is notified, however, of Dr. Flagg's activities and apprised of certain nonclassified data. Medical records recently subpoenaed indicate that Dr. Flagg has incurable cancer and was given 3 months to live over a year ago. The experiments on his victims resulted in uncontrolled cell growth - much like cancer. Dr. Mercury is interested in Dr. Flagg's research and decides to pursue an investigation. Adept files a report on what he knows with The Star Guard.
Golem is at the Star Base trying to help the scientists with the repair work when the report is received. He realizes the importance of the report and asks Samantha Moore to program the base's computer to do a search based on Adept's report. The results alarm him and he calls Thunderbolt in since much of the data is undecipherable to his sensors.

Thunderbolt quickly responds and travels to the Base. She is pleased to see that many of the consoles and systems that were disassembled on her last visit have now been put back together. The Scientists are working at a fast pace, trying to complete the repairs before their vacation runs out. She has access to some classified data unknown to Adept. She contacts him but he is not a member of The Star Guard and does not have access to a FTL radio. He decides, after a 25 minute lag-time in communications, to speak with Thunderbolt in person. He achieves escape velocity and when he reaches the fringes of the atmosphere, he accelerates to FTL speeds. He calls ahead to announce his intention to visit the base but the asteroid base's systems are still malfunctioning and he is attacked as he nears to within 100 miles of the base.
Adept receives a minor wound from the attack and is angered that the base's malfunctions have not been addressed. Golem attempts to rendezvous with Adept and escort him in but Adept is wary of being attacked again and Golem is not known for being tactful. Thunderbolt tries to defuse the situation but Adept decides to return to Earth.

Omega Man has also been following up on some of the recent missions he participated in with the Star Guard and comes across some alarming data. The Solar Probe data he has been investigating shows signs of having being used by Dr. Flagg in his illegal mutagenic experiments. He contacts Golem and Thunderbolt and joins them at the Star Base without incident.
With Thunderbolt and Omega Man both working on the data and with Thunderbolt's high security level, various classified reports come to light. A SHIELD report has information on a facility located south of San Fernando, on the coast of Mexico, coming online a short time after Dr. Flagg escaped from his Nevada facility. Dr. Flagg seems to have somehow gained tremendous monetary support from several agencies including Hydra and A.I.M. and the protection of various United Nations members, as well as the Mexican Army and Local Police.
Reports from Starshine, a member of The Defense League, confirm that Dr. Flagg is receiving funding from A.I.M. for something called: Project: Rebirth. She also reports that someone in the Southwest has been hiring super-powered muscle. analysis of Dr. Flagg's experiments also bear striking similarities to those conducted by Pfalzgraf, a long time foe of The Defense League.

As more and more evidence is accumulated, Adept is again called in and the four heroes study the data on the facility. SHIELD reports that they attempted to take the facility with a 24 man team using armored hover-craft but were cut to pieces by an incredible system of ground to air defense batteries. With the Mexican government compromised, the UN has only authorized a small assault team and then only if the mission can be accomplished within a 2 hour period.
According to SHIELD, the air defenses of the facility preclude an air assault. There are known to be sea caves in the area and the facility is located on the coast. However, there are also reports of mines in the area. Several of the heroes do not function well underwater and more attention is given to the possibility of a ground assault.
Further investigation reveals that Dr. Flagg has been offering the promise of immortality to various heads of state in return for protection and monetary support. Even as they study the data, a report comes in that the Mexican city of San Fernando has been blacked out due to an increased power demand from Flagg's facility. The heroes jump into action & formulate a plan on the way to Earth.

THE ADVENTURE : Adept is given the responsibility of taking out the power to the facility since the lines are buried one mile away from the facility and he can teleport from that distance in a few seconds. Golem shape-changes into a rusty old truck delivering supplies to the facility and manages to approach the last checkpoint without discovery. Omega Man and Thunderbolt stun the two guards. Omega Man strips one guard and poses as the driver of the truck. Thunderbolt hides in the rear of the truck.
As they approach the facility, they can see the sea to one side, with access to the sea caves and the facility to the south. Huge concrete barriers block the view of much of the facility. Constructed on several huge pylons, they can see what seem to be a system of laser cannons.

As the truck enters the courtyard of the facility, they are challenged by a black woman dressed in a revealing jumpsuit. "Hey, Pablo!", she cries in a Ghetto accent, "Where ya going?" As she nears the truck, she sees the driver more clearly and cries, "You're not Pablo!" Omega Man recognizes her as Frenzy, a super-strong mutant with a bad reputation. She attempts to pull the door off of the rusty truck and is surprised when she does not succeed. Golem, shape- shifted as the truck, feels like someone tried to pull his arm from his socket.
Using this as a signal, Adept cuts the power lines to the facility and prepares himself for the daunting task of teleporting the mile to the facility.
Before everyone can pile out of the truck and before Golem can shape-shift back to normal, Frenzy grasps the door handle, lifts the truck over her head and throws it across the courtyard. The truck crashes over 70 feet away and everyone is shaken by the impact.
Thunderbolt regains her balance as Golem shape-shifts to his normal shape. She sends a shimmering thunderbolt at Frenzy that knocks the powerful mutant from her feet. Frenzy yells into her comm, "We have mother lovin' Freaks!"

A slim, shapely woman steps from behind a nearby pillar and suddenly, the world turns topsy turvy for the group of heroes. Golem is the worst affected and almost loses his sense of reality. He can barely stand and has lost his sense of direction. Thunderbolt's world twists and dances but she bears up better under the awful power of the Savage Land mutant known as Vertigo. Omega Man is the least affected but also the least able to respond since he is so dependent upon his suit's power for flight. He as well as the other heroes have concluded that the massive air defense systems will not react to their presence as long as they stay grounded.
Omega Man regains his balance and uses his powers to drain the energy around Vertigo. Golem charges across the courtyard but with his sense of balance gone, winds up going in the wrong direction. Fortunately, as he leaves the area, Vertigo's power affects him less.

Thunderbolt charges toward Vertigo but then sees that Golem has regained his sense of balance and is also running toward the mutant. She changes direction and runs toward Frenzy.
Observing the battlefield, Omega Man notices a three man tank crew running toward a main line tank parked next to the facility. He uses his Energy Drain attack and is satisfied to see two of the soldiers drop in their tracks. The third member of the crew makes it to the tank and can no longer be seen.
Unfortunately, Omega Man remains in the vicinity of Vertigo's power and crumples bonelessly to the ground.
Golem rushes up to Vertigo an prepares to attack her. A huge, misshapen shape erupts from the ground in front of Golem! He recognizes the shape as that of Armadillo! Thinking quickly, Golem grabs Armadillo. The orange skinned monster tries to escape the grab but Golem's strength prevails. With tremendous effort, Golem swings Armadillo like a bat and smashes him into Vertigo!! The mutant woman flies across the battlefield.
Adept teleports onto the battlefield from a mile away. He sees a figure emerge from the facility, a female figure that he dimly recognizes as Whiplash.

Adept Comms, "Thunderbolt! You handle Whiplash!" He lashes out with his power, simultaneously striking her from over 25 feet away while teleporting her near one of the anti-aircraft pillars.
Thunderbolt sends Whiplash crashing back into the building with a thunderous crash of lightning.
Frenzy leaps over one of the 20 ' tall barriers and the anti-aircraft lasers do not target her. She misjudges the distance, however, and lands some distance away. She charges Adept and smashes into him like a runaway locomotive, knocking him off his feet.
Grabbing the downed Armadillo, Golem throws him through the air to land on top of Vertigo. She groans in pain but the mammoth Armadillo quickly rises to his feet and lumbers toward Golem with surprising speed. His claws flash and Golem staggers backward, his metal hard chest showing claw marks.

Eel rises from water, coming from guarding the sea caves. He joins the battle and the group finds themselves outnumbered. Dr. Flagg appears in the entrance to the facility holding a strange device that he points at Golem. Instructing Vertigo to back off, he fires the device at Golem, bathing the metal hero in a sickly green ray. Golem seems unaffected by the ray and smashes Vertigo into a nearby pillar. Flagg chuckles hoarsely and lurches back into the building.
As the battle continues, Golem is assaulted by waves of weakness and strange, rust spots begin to grow upon his metal frame. Thunderbolt knocks Frenzy into the water and the villainness takes refuge in the sea caves. Thunderbolt decides not to venture into the caves and joins her companions in defeating Armadillo, Eel and Whiplash. Vertigo remains unconscious.
Thunderbolt drags the unconscious Eel to the growing pile of villains while Omega Man uses his Energy Drain powers to keep them unconscious. Adept and Golem head for the facility where Dr. Flagg was last seen. Golem's condition is growing worse, with large portions of his metal body appearing to rust away.

Golem finds Dr. Flagg collapsed on the floor, trying to crawl toward a bank of machinery. He is disfigured and obviously in great pain. The cancer has made him a monster - one that reflects his true nature. He stares at Golem with hatred and gasps, "You may have ended my days, but so have I ended yours..."
Adept entangles Flagg but the doctor continues to struggle, trying to reach a shadowy alcove. He strives in vain, futilely reaching toward his goal until, with a final gasp, he stiffens and goes limp. Adept hears his death rattle but is more concerned with Golem who has collapsed like a half melted candle.

Adept calls in Omega Man to try and make sense of the various instruments and control consoles. He studies the device that Flagg used on Golem, trying to discern the purpose of the device and find a way to reverse the process. He studies the complex device for long moments and concludes that it is capable of modifying the molecular structure of allotropic compounds. It is destroying Golem's molecular structure and there does not seem to be a function built in to reverse the condition. Golem continues to disintegrate, looking more and more like a puddle of rusty mercury. Only the gems embedded in his body are unaffected by the deadly process.
Thunderbolt looks on in horror, knowing that Golem's consciousness resides in the metal body and not in the mystic gems. When the metal body is completely destroyed, Golem will die.
Omega Man examines the control consoles and brings up several computer screens. He quickly deduces the design and purpose of the apparatus even as Adept investigates the shadowy alcove and finds a male, human body encased in what seems to be a hyperbaric chamber. According to the monitors, the body is in perfect condition but being sustained by a full life support system. The monitors show no brain wave activity. The hyperbaric chamber is connected to another nearby chamber that is empty.
Omega Man finds a journal entry made only minutes ago by Dr. Flagg. The doctor had intended to transfer his consciousness into the perfect body he had created. His journal entry says, "I shall arise again as the child of light and cleanse the world of darkness, re-making it in my own image."

Golem now shows no signs of life. Adept acts quickly and teleports Golem's misshapen remains into the second chamber and tries to active the systems. A computer voice announces that there is insufficient power to complete the process. The group realize that their cutting the power to the facility stopped Dr. Flagg from completing the process and now prevents them from trying to save their comrade.
Realizing that they need massive amounts of power, Thunderbolt calls upon her mystic mentor to grant her luck and summons a multitude of small lightning bolts to strike the power grid!! The lights blaze and computer consoles explode as the power surges into the machinery. A flash of light explodes around the hyperbaric chamber and the computer announces, "Process Terminated. No Life Signs Detected."

A breathless moment later, the figure in the hyperbaric chamber stirs, pain spasming his face. Adept rushes to his side even as the radio crackles to life. It is SHIELD, warning that the Mexican Army is coming in force and for the heroes to evacuate at once. Adept reaches for the man and the naked figure responds in terror, lashing out with great speed. A white hot bar of dazzling light bursts from his hand, striking Adept a staggering blow. Adept senses that the attack was made in blind terror and confusion and tries to ignore the pain and soothe the terrified man.
Adept grabs a blue and white costume draped over a nearby console and helps the naked figure clothe himself. The man is well muscled but of medium build. He is brown haired and moderately handsome. In their haste to see if Golem's consciousness has survived, they forget about the mystic gems in the transfer chamber.

Thunderbolt carries the figure from the scene, followed by Adept and Omega Man just as several half-track, armored vehicles enter the area and disgorge men. They quickly gain altitude but are afraid of going too high for fear of injuring the figure. They hope that Golem's consciousness has been transferred into the body. Thunderbolt lands some miles outside of Phoenix, in the desert. They question the figure, trying to determine his identity.
The figure at first seems confused and weak and has trouble forming words and coherent thoughts. As time goes by, however, he seems to gain strength and actually absorbs power from the sun. At one point he begins to levitate and must be restrained. Omega Man is soon called away to handle an emergency with one of his fans. Thunderbolt and Adept continue to question the figure and soon conclude that it is Golem they are speaking to, a confused and disoriented Golem but Golem none-the-less. However, when they call him Golem, the figure says that "Golem" is no more.

Thunderbolt and Adept take Golem back to the asteroid base and try to help him orient himself with the world. The base's sensors scan him and say that his physiology is unfamiliar but that his brain waves correlate to those on record of Golem's.
The scientists are busy making repairs but Dr. Betty Haywood immediately takes an interest in this new Golem and quickly takes charge, leading him away to the bio-lab where she hooks him up to all sorts of monitoring devices. Looking more in possession of his senses an hour later, the figure emerges with Dr. Haywood at his side and announces, "Golem is no more. Call me Light Sabre."
