Eric Pride - Adventure Record - Troll Hunt

       We decide to spend the day remaining before the caravan is ready to hunt the troll. We rely on Grog's knowledge of the beast and tales we have all heard from birth. We know fire is the key in defeating the beast. The group stocks up on vials of oil. Only Grog has a flaming weapon and only Eric and Aurora have crafted arrows equipped with alchemist fire.
       We meet with Vatill, the head of the council, early in the morning. The town will only offer 4,000 bounty for the troll. Gribbon has placed a bounty of 12,000 gp for the Troll. We ask Varill to get the bounty money from Gribbon and have the town present it to us after the hunt is finished. The less we deal with Gribbon the better.
       Grog likes his pet pig and, much to Eric's dismay, makes arrangements to buy it a ribbon and keep it as a pet.

       We journey to where Eric's map says the Troll cave is located and soon see signs of a Troll. A barren landscape with shredded trees and mounds of noxious troll dung make finding the troll's cave easy. Fortunately, there are tracks that Grog sights that indicate the troll is probably in his cave and has made a recent kill. Eric looks at the tracks and concludes that only one large Troll is in residence and the blood and drag marks come from a large antlered buck.
       A plan is quickly made. Brandon and Whitefire will climb above the cave entrance with bundles of brush and bark that has been soaked with oil. When the Troll comes out of his cave, they will drop the bundles and set them ablaze.
       Aribel will use a spell to make the sound of a large bear in heat, hopefully drawing the Troll out of its cave. Everyone will try to take one shot at it before it can reach us. We will then surround it and hack at it until it falls. As soon as it falls, we must soak it in oil and set it ablaze so it does not regenerate.
       We leave the horses and dog some distance away, tying them loosely. The wind is blowing from the North, masking our approach.

       The Troll reacts as we had hoped, charging from its cave at the sound of the bear. We wait until it is 100 feet away and fire! It's speed is stunning as it charges into the group where Grog shouts a challenge in Orc.
       Whitefire and Brandon drop the brush in front of the cave and light it with a tindertwig. They then rush to join the fray. Grog faces the towering 9' Green Monster with courage to make the bards sing. Aurora and Aribeth pepper it with arrows. Eric reads from a Ray of Enfeeblement scroll but the Troll is unphazed.

       Brandon and Whitefire arrive on the scene and the Troll is surrounded! It recognizes Grog as the main threat with his flaming axe, however, and concentrates on the Half-Orc Barbarian.
       Drawing Longsword and Shortsword, Eric steps into the fray and attacks the towering green behemoth. He manages to strike solidly with his shortsword. To his dismay, he can see the creature's wounds healing at an unbelievable rate.
       Brandon circles around the brute, striking like lightning and stabbing the monster in the back. Whitefire rains a flurry of blows on the creature, trying to stun it. Aribeth starts a bardic song that raises our spirits and lends strength to our limbs. Aurora contemplates using a Burning Hands spell but realizes that it will catch at least one of her companions. She fires her shortbow at it.

       The Troll moves away from Eric, trying to avoid being surrounded. It's ten foot long reach and tearing teeth are taking a toll on Grog and he is bleeding from many wounds. Aribeth steps up and casts a healing spell on Grog. Eric can no longer reach the monster with his swords and so drops the weapons and draws his longbow. He sends two arrows at the monster's upper body but misses.
       The Troll falls before our concentrated attacks! Whitefire quickly douses it with a vial of oil. Eric readies his fire arrow, knowing the creature's regeneration will allow it to recover in seconds. It lurches to its feet and Eric fires. The arrow misses the creature's head.
       The troll seems maddened with rage! It claws at Grog, nearly rending the half-orc. Another fire arrow strikes the Troll but does not ignite the oil. The Troll again goes down and before it can recover, Grog's flaming blade flashes down and cleaves into the monster's chest! The Troll erupts in flames!
       Several more pints of oil are poured over the Troll to make sure than it will not be able to regenerate. On Eric's suggestion, Grog slices off the Troll's seared ear so he can wear it as a badge of honor. We collect the Troll's teeth as proof of our victory.

       Brandon searches the Troll Cave and finds 60 platinum pieces. 1 gem, a potion and a ring. Eric casts Detect Magic and tells the group that the ring has a dim enchantment. He also uses the Detect Magic spell to search the Troll cave but finds nothing.
       We quickly return to town before nightfall where we present the Troll teeth to Varill. True to his word he gathers a crowd and presents us with the 12,000 gp bounty for the Troll. He the declares a festival for the night to celebrate.
       Brandon dresses in an old robe and cloak and disguises his appearance. He mingles with the crowd, trying to spot any trouble. All he hears are several townsmen complaining about the pay given to us and inferring that they will wind up paying the price.

       We take the ring to the local mage and he identifies it as a Ring of Protection +1 for a cost of 100 gp. The potion is tasted and is a Jump Potion. The potion is diced for and, after a lengthy discussion, Brandon buys the Ring from the group for 300 gp per person. It is decided that Aribeth gets a full share.
       The platinum and gem net each of us 100 gp. The bounty on the Troll net each of us 2000 gp. Finally, Brandon pays each of us 300 gp for the Ring for a total of 2400 gp.
