Aurora Ravensong - Adventure Record - Troll Hunt

       We decide to spend the remaining time before the caravan is loaded to hunt the troll. We rely on common knowledge of the beast and what Grog has told us of what he knows of trolls. We know fire and acid are the only sure ways to permanently destroy the creature. We buy plenty of oil and Eric and Aurora try to craft some more arrows equipped with alchemist's fire in addition to those previously prepared for us.
       We meet with Varill, the head of the council, early in the morning. The town will only promise 4,000 gp bounty for the troll, however, Gribbon has previously placed a bounty of 12,000 gp on the Troll. We request our bounty money be obtained from Gribbon and be given to us by town representatives after the hunt is successfully completed. We wish to have as little contact with the unsavory Gribbon as is possible.
       Grog has grown very fond of his pig and wishes to permanently keep her for a pet. He even buys her a ribbon and makes arrangements to take her along on our journey.

       We quickly travel to where Eric's map says the Troll cave is located and soon see things that indicate habitation by such a creature. A landscape lacking any signs of life, decimated trees and mountains of troll manure make finding the vicinity of the troll's cave easy. Luckily for us, Eric finds tracks that likely indicate that the troll is probably in his cave and has made a recent kill of a large horned creature. Thus the Troll is theoretically holed up and is gorging on its fresh kill.
       After discussion, we agree on an ingenious plan. Brandon and Whitefire will climb above the cave mouth with bundles of brush and tinder that has been soaked with oil. When the Troll emerges from the cave in response to the distraction we plan, they will drop the bundles and light them.
       Aribel will use a spell to make the sound of a large bear in heat,which we hope will draw the Troll out of its cave. Everyone will try to take one shot at it before it can reach us. We will then surround it and hack at it until it falls. As soon as it falls, we must soak it in oil and set it ablaze so it does not regenerate.
       We leave the horses and dog some distance away for their safety and to keep them from fleeing in terror. They are tethered loosely so that should we fail to return, they could get loose and not starve to death or be easy prey to predators! . The wind is in the North, masking our approach.

       The Troll reacts as we had hoped, charging from its cave at the sound of the bear. We wait until it is 100 feet away and fire! The Troll's speed is amazing when it charges into the group where Grog shouts a challenge in Orc.
       Whitefire and Brandon drop the brush in front of the cave and light it using a tindertwig. They, then, rush to join the battle. Grog bravely stands up to the horrendous 9' green creature - facing him with the courage of a Knight of old. Aurora and our halfling bard, Aribeth send arrow after arrow towards it. Eric casts a spell from a scroll but it seemingly has no effect on the monstrosity.

       Brandon and Whitefire join the battle surrounding the Troll but it recognizes Grog as the true threat with his flaming axe and concentrates its attacks on him.
       Drawing both of his weapons, Eric enters the melee and attacks the towering green giant. He manages to get in a solid hit or so when he notices that the creature's wounds are closing at rapid rate.
       Brandon comes at it from the back and gets a backstab on the monster. Our Monk, Whitefire repeatedly strikes the creature with mighty blows attempting to stun it, while Aribeth begins a tune that heartens us and strengthens our arms. Aurora plans on using a Burning Hands spell but realizes that although it likely would be effective against the Troll, it would catch at least one of her party in the area of effect. Instead, she shoots it with arrows.

       The Troll edges away from Eric, trying to escape being surrounded. Its ten foot long reach and gashing teeth are badly injuring Grog and his life is trickling away! Aribeth moves behind him and heals Grog - one of the best moves of the hard fought battle. The Troll has moved beyond Eric's reach, so he drops his weapons and draws his bow. He fires two arrows at the monster but misses.
       The Troll falls under our teamed attacks! Whitefire swiftly pours a vial of oil on it. Eric readies his fire arrow, knowing the creature's legendary recovery will allow it to recover in seconds. It quickly staggers to its feet and Eric fires. The arrow misses the monster.
       The troll seems insane with fury tries to rend Grog, nearly succeeding but we continue to strive to defeat the horrific being. A fire arrow strikes the Troll but does not ignite the oil. The Troll once more is taken down and before it can again recover, Grog's flaming axe flashes down and bites into the monster's chest! The Troll explodes into flame!
       Many more pints of oil are poured onto the Troll to make sure than it will not regenerate. On Eric's suggestion, Grog slices off the Troll's seared ear so he can wear it as a medal of honor. We collect the Troll's teeth as further proof of our victory.

       Brandon searches the Troll Cave and finds several items including a magical ring and a potion. Eric uses Detect Magic on the treasure and searches the Troll cave utilizing it there as well, but finds nothing.
       We return to town before nightfall where we present the Troll teeth to the Council. True to Varill's word, he gathers a crowd and presents us with the Troll bounty and then declares a festival to celebrate.
       Brandon disguises himself and infiltrates the crowd, seeking any signs of potential trouble. All he hears are some townsfolk grousing about us getting the reward and suggesting that they will be the ones who pay the tariff.

       We take the ring to the local magic user and he identifies it as a Ring of Protection +1 for a cost of 100 gp. The potion is tasted and is a Jump Potion. Lots are cast for the potion, which Aurora wins and, after discussion, Brandon is allowed to buy the ring from the Group for what we would be able to sell it for to an outsider which works out to 300 gp per person. We decide to allow Aribeth a full share due to her proof of her worth during the encounter with the Troll.
       The platinum and jewel value gives each of us 100 gp. The bounty on the Troll results in each of us 2000 gp. Finally, Brandon's payment of 300 gp to each of us for the ring gives us each (except for Brandon) 2400 gp.
